Beach Safety Tips for Babies & Toddlers

As summer approaches, new parents may start to feel uneasy and worried as a beach trip is looming on the calendar. Not to worry though! The long-awaited excursion to the seaside doesn’t have to keep parents holding their breath.

Your little one is your number one priority, so keeping them as happy and healthy as can be takes precedence over anything – AGC Pediatrics has helpful tips every parent can follow to avoid dangerous situations.

Apparel

Toddlers and babies have very delicate skin; it should be protected at all times on the beach. Many companies now make UV protectant clothing, designed specifically for the beach. If there isn’t enough forethought to purchase this when an impromptu outing arises, dark and snug clothing is a good substitution. If light can penetrate the cloth when held up to the light, it can also let rays of sun through. Water shoes are your new best friends. Children should keep these on throughout the visit on the sand: sand can get very hot, incognito shells can cut feet, and coastal creatures like crabs may pinch. Always keep hats on children, their fine hair and sensitive scalps are prime locations for terrible sunburns. Children who are old enough to walk should always have a flotation device on in case they wander into the water. Life jackets, water wings, or “floaties” are all widely available. Another great idea is to dress children in extremely bright colors. They may meander away in the blink of an eye, but they will stick out like a sore thumb.

Sunblock

Sunblock deserves its own section, that’s how important it is! Babies 6 months and under can’t wear sunscreen yet and should be kept out of the sun completely. Older babies and toddlers should always wear a full spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more – the higher, the better. Before applying a new sunblock, test on a small area of skin to make sure there are no allergies. Always opt for those that are meant for children, are more natural, and have less chemicals. You can never be too cautious when it comes to coverage. Parents should apply sunscreen heavily, at least 15 minutes prior to sun exposure. It should be reapplied after any swimming or water contact and intermittently throughout your outing.

Beach Conditions

Beaches regularly have their water tested to make sure it is safe for the public. While it’s not done every day, the most recent water quality results should be posted somewhere by the beach. If you can’t find the posting, you can call the park service or coastguard to find out. Lifeguards should always be on duty while you’re at the beach with your youngster. Even though we have full confidence in your supervision abilities, it only takes a second for a child to get lost or tumble into the water. Lifeguards are also helpful should an unfortunate jellyfish encounter occur. Always bring big umbrellas, UV protectant tents, or comparable items that provide lots of shade. The beach is a wide open area, and sand and water reflect sunlight. Children should be in the shade as much as possible.

What Else Helps?

Bring lots of fresh water and a cooler full of healthy snacks, like fruits and veggies. Water not only will keep children hydrated while playing in the heat, it’s great for rinsing eyes and hands (and other areas) full of sand. The cornstarch that has been sitting in the cabinet forever finally has a use! Cornstarch is great for getting stubborn wet sand off. Simply sprinkle cornstarch on your baby’s sticky, sandy skin and the cornstarch will absorb a lot of the moisture, making dusting off way easier. A cheap inflatable pool is great for curious toddlers at the beach. They will have their very own, private swimming area on the beach. Not only will they be entertained and feel included, parents can relax knowing the ocean isn’t the only alluring water source.
