FAQs

Although the best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated, the practice of good health habits can help to stop the spread of germs and prevent seasonal illness. In order to prevent upper respiratory illnesses, such as the flu, the doctors and staff of AGC Pediatrics recommend that parents take the time to teach their children some of these simple prevention techniques:

  • Avoid close contact. If your child suffers from flu-like symptoms, it’s best that he or she keeps a safe distance from others. Experts recommend keeping your child home for at least 24 hours until his or her fever is gone—without the use of fever-reducing medications.
  • Always wash your hands. Washing your hands is a good health habit year round, but it is especially important during flu season. If soap and running water are not available, be sure to provide your child with hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your mouth and nose. Remind your child to cover his or her mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of sickness.
  • Practice good health habits. Make sure that your child understands the importance of other good health habits that boost the immune system, such as getting a good night’s sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, and participating in physical activities.
