What Fall Allergens to Avoid

There are a few culprits behind fall allergies, including: Ragweed, Sagebrush, Goldenrods, and mold. Ragweed is the most common contributing plant to fall allergies. Ragweed pollen can travel through the air for hundreds of miles, meaning you don’t have to grow it in your own backyard to suffer the consequences. Ragweed is most commonly found in open lots and fields and in warmer, Southern regions can pollinate through the winter.

Many other fall plants, such as Goldenrods, are insect-pollenated instead of wind. These plants are not as worrisome as wind-pollinated plants such as Ragweed, but can still cause allergies in parts of the U.S. where they are found.

Mold seems to thrive in the fall and can be found on moist leaves, soil, and compost piles. Fall mold spores most commonly sprout after Ragweed has pollenated, but often dies after the first frost of winter. Mold is light and can easily be inhaled into the lungs.
