Eat Breakfast This Thanksgiving

Many families wake up on Thanksgiving morning and starve themselves until the big meal. Everyone wants to save as much room as they can to gorge during Thanksgiving dinner.

Research shows that eating more frequent, smaller meals gives people more control over how much they eat at a time. To avoid stuffing yourself with more food than you need during dinner, be sure to eat a small breakfast on Thanksgiving morning.

Find Healthier Thanksgiving Recipes

Many Thanksgiving dishes call for more sugar, butter, or fat than what’s actually needed for taste. When making your turkey gravy, try using a fat-free chicken broth! You’ll find that guests can’t tell the difference and it’s a much healthier alternative.

A great way to sweeten recipes and meals is to substitute sugar with fruit purees. Fruit has natural sugars and will sweeten most recipes with better flavor than artificial sugar.

Use fat-free sour crème and plain yogurt for creamy dishes such as mashed potatoes or casseroles.

Minimize Portions and Take Your Time

When you’re trying to save room for your Thanksgiving favorites while sampling everyone else’s homemade dishes, you can end up with an overflowing plate of treats. Minimize portions to prevent over eating. By taking smaller portions, you can still try everyone’s best dishes without stuffing yourself to the brim.

Another way to avoid gorging at Thanksgiving is eating slowly. Instead of eating as quickly as you can to get a good spot in line for seconds, slow down to appreciate the food and great company.

Plan Physical Activity

Before or after your Thanksgiving meal, plan a fun physical activity everyone in the family will enjoy. Sign up for a morning Thanksgiving road race, or take the family for a walk after dinner. Staying active will make your family fit and keep everyone out of the kitchen – at least a little while.
