It’s that time again – the fall season is here and packed full of sports. Whether your child plays football, basketball or participates in cheerleading or dance, the season is sure to be scheduled with practices, recitals and games. Five Simple Fall Sports Safety Tips for Your Active Child

Make Sure Your Child Has Proper Fitting Protective Gear

While on the field, on the court or on the stage, it’s important for your child to have the appropriate protective gear to keep them safe throughout the fall season. Every sport requires different gear, so your child’s spring soccer cleats won’t work for the fall football season.

Make sure before they start their first practice that they have all of the recommended gear from helmets to mouth guards. Also, get them fitted at your local sports store to ensure safely fitting gear. A loose helmet or shoes that are too tight can cause injury in the long run.

Keep Their Gym Bag Prepped

A packed and prepared gym bag can keep kids ready to tackle whatever obstacle comes their way. Make sure their bag has at least two full water bottles to keep dehydration away. Pack in a change of clothes and shoes, a healthy snack, and a basic first aid kit in case of injury.

Don’t Play through an Injury

Overuse injuries are a top sports injury because it is so often overlooked. Kids and teens may play through a sore foot or ankle, not wanting to let their team down or miss out on playing, but playing through an injury can turn a minor injury into a major one.

If your child is showing signs of pain or discomfort, past general muscle soreness, speak to their coach about giving them a little time off and schedule an appointment with their pediatrician.

Dress for the Weather

The fall season is full of weather changes. The weather swings from stifling August heat to frigid November cold. No matter what the weather, make sure your child has the right clothing and gear on for the temperature. In high heat, opt for light weight, dry wicking jersey clothing during practices. In cold temperatures, keep them warm with long sleeve dry wick material and wool socks. Don’t be fooled by cooler weather – kids still need plenty of water to stay hydrated while keeping active, so make sure they have a water bottle at all times.

Take Them in for a Fall Sports Physical with Their Pediatrician

One of the best ways to keep your child safe through the fall sports season is to schedule a sports physical with their pediatrician. Most teams and sports leagues require physicals in order to register, but even if they don’t, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment anyways.

Your pediatrician will look for potential problems, assess your child’s height, weight and overall physical health. They’ll be able to point out any risks or complications for your child including asthma, allergies, overuse injuries and more, and help give your child the tools they need to stay safe on the field.
